Shaded Dome Technologies provides a smart, cool and adaptable venue facility, meeting the highest standards in comfort, sustainability, flexibility, accessibility, safety and security for its visitors. The Shaded Dome has been specifically designed to protect the venue from often demanding climatological conditions, like those that may prevail in desert climates.
The Shaded Dome is a semi-permanent facility, comprised of an air-supported, environmentally controlled dome in which a pleasant microclimate is created. The dome is positioned under a tent layer (the Shade), supported by a steel cable structure. This passive design element provides the dome with protection from often demanding climatological conditions like for example solar radiation, wind, high air temperature, humidity and precipitation.
The microclimate is enabled by a constant airflow between the dome and the shade together with the use of a custom made combination of several membrane materials. The Shaded Dome’s integration of passive design elements and microclimate creates a comfortable indoor environment for both venue and visitors and is efficient in material use, re-usable and self-supporting in energy needs.
The Shaded Dome has an unprecedented flexibility in size and shape. The floorplan and overall shape can be free-form and footprints can be extended up to 20.000 m2, the size of almost three football pitches. Furthermore, the lightweight construction encompasses climate related building physics, not inferior to constructions with high mass. The Shaded Dome™ requires limited transport volume, and can be constructed and dismantled in a matter of days.
The Shaded Dome originated from the idea to develop climate-controlled, indoor training facilities for the FIFA World Cup 2022 in Qatar. The concept allows for a multitude of utilizations, such as travelling exhibitions, sports venues, museums and entertainment, which all can enjoy the benefits of the dome’s large free-span interior.
Travelling exhibitions, sports venues and theme parks are upcoming and highly popular activities. Various organizations are keen to bring arts and sciences, sports and entertainment to both a country’s great centers, as well as the more remote regions. However, finding the right accommodation to host these activities has proven to be very challenging.
The Shaded Dome has been developed to meet this challenge: it provides a smart, cool and adaptable facility, which meets the highest standards in comfort, sustainability, flexibility, accessibility, safety and security for its visitors. At the same time, The Shaded Dome protects the venue from often demanding climatological conditions and offers a low total cost of ownership.
In 2016, The Shaded Dome was awarded with 'De Vernufteling' peoples choice award. An annual prize by KIVI and NLingenieurs for the most innovative project by a Dutch engineering firm.
Shaded Dome as a solution for a Fieldlab Smart Base
In cooperation with TNO Defence, Safety & Security, Shaded Dome Technologies has obtained an assignment from the Dutch Ministry of Defence to modify the Shaded Dome to make it suitable for ballistic protection to the dome. The current Shaded Dome concept fits perfectly with the ambition of the Dutch Ministry of Defence to set up and operate a base in a more flexible and adaptive manner, and with a smaller logistical footprint.
Shaded Dome is a semi-permanent inflatable climate-controlled facility that is secured with steel cables. A membrane structure covers the dome and protects it against often demanding climatological conditions like for example solar radiation, wind, high air temperatures, humidity and precipitation. In addition, Shaded Dome has a very low energy consumption. Initially, Shaded Dome Technologies developed the Shaded Dome as a cool, adaptable and sustainable indoor training sports facility. However, in addition to being a sports facility, the Shaded Dome turned out to be very interesting for other applications, such as a mobile hospital, a mess hall, accommodation, production facility and a museum.
As Shaded Dome is extremely light, it can easily be transported by air and moreover can quickly be set up and expanded as desired. As a result, Shaded Dome can be a sustainable and promising alternative to the 20 ft containers that the Dutch Ministry of Defence resides in during peacekeeping missions nowadays. The challenges for the Fieldlab Smart Base are threefold: improve protection, reduce energy and water and improve logistics services. In a few years time, the Shaded Dome is expected to meet the goal for a zero ecological footprint.
The second prototype of Shaded Dome has meanwhile been completed. The current Shaded Dome is not yet suitable as a military facility. The material of which the dome is made actually does not yet provide the desired protection against explosive materials. Over a one-year period, the prototype will be tested extensively at the Field Smart Base of the Ministry of Defence at Soesterberg to experience its usability for Fieldlab Smart Bases.
On July 11th 2017, Shaded Dome Technologies was founded by ZJA Zwarts & Jansma Architects, Royal HaskoningDHV and Poly-Ned.
